The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has demonstrated that the Strait of Hormuz is not simply a strategic chokepoint, but a live operating constraint. Freight, war-risk insurance and contractual performance have adjusted in sequence, underscoring a broader point: in volatile environments, the critical differentiator is not information in the abstract, but timely, decision-relevant intelligence that enables companies to anticipate changes in operability before they are fully reflected in prices, contract performance or physical disruption.
The operational shift
Between February and March 2026, Hormuz ceased to be a background geopolitical reference and became a live commercial variable. The shift was visible less in official statements than in the mechanics of execution. Freight moved first. VLCC rates for Middle East–China movements were reported above $170,000 per day on 24 February, while implied earnings on the main benchmark route reached $423,736 per day on 3 March. LNG spot freight followed the same direction, with rates reported on 3 March at $61,500 per day in the Atlantic and $41,000 in the Pacific, increases of 43% and 45% respectively.
Insurance then amplified the effect. War-risk premiums reportedly moved from around 0.25% of hull value to levels as high as 3%, implying voyage costs in the multi-million-dollar range for standard tanker values. The significance of this repricing lies in its speed. Voyage economics deteriorated faster than operators could renegotiate contracts, adjust routing or reallocate cargoes.
Contractual disruption followed. On 19 March, QatarEnergy’s CEO reported material damage affecting two LNG trains and one GTL facility, with approximately 12.8 mtpa taken out of service and a significant revenue impact expected. On 24 March, the company stated that it had determined it needed to declare force majeure on certain long-term LNG contracts, although this did not necessarily mean that formal declarations had already been issued. Clients cited in reporting included Italy, Belgium, South Korea and China.
The broader point is that by the time disruption becomes visible in costs or contractual performance, the room for manoeuvre is already narrowing.

- Energy-market intelligence. Freight and insurance premia feed directly into delivered cost, but their commercial significance depends on the wider system. Alternative crude and LNG flows, regional inventory buffers, substitution between suppliers, and the reaction in derivatives and spreads all determine how physical risk transmits into price formation and margin pressure. The relevant question is not only where prices move, but how quickly risk converts into commercial exposure across procurement, sales and hedging.
